What is hair ice?

Hair ice, also commonly known as ice wool or frost beard, is an unique type of ice that forms on dead wood. Appearing as fine silky hair, it is found mostly at lattitudes between 45-55 in broadleaf forests. In 1918, a prolific meteorologist named Alfred Wagner discovered that a specific type of fungi was the catalyst that formed the unique hair-like ice formation. More recently in 2015, it has been identified as the fungus Exidiopis Effuse, that is responsible for the ice hair to grow.
